Early Mathematics in Teacher Training Colleges in Afghanistan
GIZ is supporting the Afghan Ministry of Education to introduce a new diploma in Teacher Training Colleges to train Afghan primary school teachers in the subjects literacy, mathematics, life skills, sports, health and environment, art, curriculum, teaching methodology and the use of teaching aids. As teacher training for primary school teachers does not yet formally exist in Afghanistan, the curriculum and syllabi for all subjects of the new diploma were developed in multidisciplinary working groups and finalized in 2016.
In joint partnership with the Afghan working group, consisting of academic members from the Ministry of Education and local GIZ staff, the IZB team provides syllabus revision, material development and training for a total of four semesters in the subject "mathematics". The main goals are to raise awareness for the importance of early mathematics and to find a balance between international good practices and the Afghan context, local school books as well as the local infrastructure. IZB collaborates via Skype with the working group in developing teaching material for lecturers as well as working material for students under the guidance and quality control.
